I've got to head back to Miami for about 20 days. The weather in Miami has finally changed from the wet season to the dry season, so I thought I'd take the SL down for this stint. It'll be about a 3200 mile round trip.

The forecast tomorrow is rain all the way down to Jacksonville, where I'll stop for the night. Looks like I'll be able to drop the top Wednesday morning for the ride in. I'm hoping to keep it down for most of the time I'm there...I park in a garage at both "home" and work.

So my checklist:

Fresh Mobil 1 - check
Fresh wiper blades - check
Fresh Rain X on windshield - check
Clean out and vacuum the interior - check
Full tank of 93 octane with a splash of injector cleaner - check
Undercarriage inspection - check
Tire pressure 30 front/35 rear - check
Beatles finally on iPod - check
Cigars - check
Red Bull - check
Florida SunPass - check
Fuzzy Dice from Rockcrusher - check
Fresh batteries in Assbabe's little friend - check (I'll be gone a while)

Whohoo! I'm ready to roll, wheels up at 6:00 am!

His 560 is easy to spot. It is the one with a rubber antenna on the fender.

Good road Bill....

Nobby, yes I am. I've decided I don't want to die with low mileage cars. They're meant to be driven.

Rowdie, I forgot, I also armor-alled the rubber antenna.

Quiltman, I'll give a shout if I get in early.

Just got to Jax, weather on the way down was a bitch. But the SL ran like a champ. Seems to run a wee bit hot, around 95C. Also the ride seemed a bit harsh, I may need new shocks and a second look at the suspension bushings. After 22 years they may be a bit cranky. No other problems. About 21 mpg @ 70-75, 93 octane. Pulled the timing resistor last summer, don't know if that helped or not but the engine seems very responsive.

Clear skies and 70 when I pulled in. Looks like a top down day tomorrow!

Sounds like a hell of a great trip.

What's the possibility of some of us getting a road trip planned for this coming summer? No real destination, just about 2500 or so miles of mindless driving for fun...

Sounds good. Maybe the mythical Rowdie GTG will actually happen...whether he likes it or not!

There's a little chi-chi restaurant district near St. Vincent's Hospital in the southwest section of Jacksonville.

I had a memorable dinner at Brick Restaurant a few years back. Pretty good food, salted glasses for the margaritas.

Brick Restaurant Menu - Jacksonville, FL 32205 - (904) 387-0606

(3585 Saint Johns Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32205-8445)

Best part is the streetside parking next to the outside dining area. How cool to pull up WDTD with stogie in hand, hop out and grab a table on the sidewalk.

There's two Churches in JAX, one is Church St., one is Church Rd. One leads to a hotel near the Jacksonville Naval Base, the other leads to a warehouse district where people flash guns at tourists.

Or at least that's the way it was last time I was there. It's been a while, though.

Sadly, I had about 6 hours in Jax, including 4 sleeping. Made it to Miami, again no problems. For some reason I got 19 mpg on the last tank, at 80-85 mph. The faster she goes, the better she runs!
