This morning I won this car for a friend of mine who lives in South California and made him a very happy man.

Finished the auction at $3500 + fees. It came out @ $4000 & small change.

He is going to restore it to its original beauty and revive it. I know you guys don't like Salvage titles, but it's still a very nice Silver Arrow with plenty of potential.

Personally I would have loved to be able to afford it just for all the parts.
Have not given up tho and still looking :grin

If you are buying a car with no intention of selling it soon I see no problem buying a salvage title especially if you will be getting the repairs done correctly or have proof that it was done properly.

The purchase price wasn't bad but not great if he plans to fix it, great price for a parts car though.

I think the biggest expense is going to be a full respray. Metallic/Pearls are a bitch to match and that 777 color code doesn't look like it can be easily matched. IMO no use having a nice ride if you can see it was partially painted.

Corner hits are the worst and you can clearly see how the radiator, windshield washer reservoir and overflow tank have all shifted. That bumper cover isn't cheap either and he is going to need a new wheel. From being on the board I have seen people looking to find them with over a year going by if course if the car is fixed and he still hasn't found the wheel he can always buy a different set.

After parts, labor and paint he might be close to the price of a non-damaged, clear title SA.

I agree 100% with this! I own a Silver Arrow and I had the front bumper replaced as the prior owner put a very tiny crack underneath it. I am a crazy perfectionist and even though you couldn't see it, just knowing it was there made me replace the bumper. I had it replaced with a factory original part and resprayed. The match was flawless and everything turned out beautifully. That alone was $5,000..........thats more then the purchase price of this car right there! Plus, I'm sure it will need inspecting, servicing, handfuls of other items (cosmetic and mechanical) and who knows about the operational condition/longevity of the soft top or its condition. Lots of unknowns that could skyrocket the repair cost of this one!

Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping it does get restored! It certainly deserves to be back on the road and looking beautiful! To bad it doesn't have the proper wheels, those would certainly have added some value. Silver Arrows missing their original components definitely take a hit value-wise.

Sapphire usually you can get away with the color not being 100% perfect match when you do a bumper but if for example he would paint the front half of the car it would have to be dead on or you will see a color change where the door meets the fender. Btw those look like the SA wheels to me but you know better than I how to spot them.

Really? I have seen some real bad paint matches on metallic cars and it looks downright horrible. My friend after having an accident had to have his Ford Edge repainted 3 times before the body shop finally got it right. Granted it was probably not a top flight paint guy as it was a shop recommended by his insurance company, which he says he will never do again even if they guarantee the work for as long as you own the car. Then again top paint shops equal big money paintjobs.

I didn't mean it that way Pete......

For the OP case..... There is far more importance issue than just worrying about paint match.....

The car frame look to be crooked...

What good, when you got a perfect paint match with a car being crooked.....??

From the look.....

The car need more than just an $50 front alignment.....

The front suspension arm is gone...... That can cost $$$$$......

If the repair are minor..... I'm sure any body shop will buy it for them self and fix it to make a profit...:wink..

Ok I see what you are saying and I agree as far as importance goes paint match is definitely below frame damage. I know most here would like to see this car repaired but it may not be feasible, judging only from the pictures I would put this in the parts car column.

When these cars become more collectible the Silver Arrows will most likely gain value quicker simply due to their rarity but when accompanied with a salvage/rebuilt title it will be a killer value wise. The main problem here IMO is as I stated in my first post that after the repairs are done you may be looking at a higher total price than just simply finding and buying a Silver Arrow in very good condition. Just my 2 cents.

My light hit last year cost $4900 to fix and it was just a headlight. The fender and hood were repaired, and the bumper wasn't touched, although the insurance company didn't know that! My paint match is perfect, the blend can't even be seen. Silver is very difficult to match. That's why I went to a top notch shop. You get what you pay for.

this car will never be a collectible with a salvage title

better off purchasing a perfect 80k r129 for 8k as both are disposable vehicles

now if this were a sl60 for 10k with no frame damage then its a great buy

It won't be soon but I am sure people said the same things about VW Beetles, BMW 2002s and Datsun 240Zs and these cars are now becoming collectables. If the SL model line carries any weight these cars will eventually be collectibles but having said that I don't think it should even be on your radar when considering purchasing an R129 in the present day.
