Had a strange side mirror issue at the weekend, shut my drivers door and the
mirror fell out - unfortunately onto concrete and whilst the mirror that fell
out looks okay on the front it is cracked on the back (seems to be two pieces
of glass welded together).

What is weird is still in the side mirror holder was another mirror, whilst
covered in glue it looked okay so I cleaned it up with a razor blade and
looks okay. So it looks like a previous owner had stuck a new mirror over an
older one. Why would they have done this - haven't noticed a difference
with the old one that was underneath when driving in this morning. Was there
a recall that this was the fix for ? Was there a newer better mirror ?

Any help appreciated as at the moment bit confused, tempted to just run
with the old mirror that was undereneath but didn't want to find myself in
a situation where the old mirror does something weird at night or other light
situation.

Many thanks,

Lawrence

A closer look at the underlying older mirror might show some sort of defect. There is a company that sells stick-on replacement mirrors for those not willing to shell out large sums of cash for replacement OEM equipment.

This may or may not help. I'm looking at an SLK that the seller is providing me the service details. At one point it was brought in for mirror turning dark and there is mention of an inside mirror that needed replacement. So maybe there is supposed to be an inside mirrror.

wannamd what you are talking about is the self dimming mirrors that came on most slks. they have a habit of leaking and most replace them with the standard mirror
