China suspected in massive breach of federal personnel data

China-based hackers are suspected of breaking into the computer networks of the U.S. government personnel office and stealing identifying information of at least 4 million federal workers, American officials said Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that data from the Office of Personnel Management and the Interior Department had been compromised.
what would they gain by getting info on gov employees?

Just use strong counter-measures

You only hear about when we are breached
We know it and releasing the info minimizes damage

You know we are doing the same to them to even a greater extent
But you never hear about it
Either they don't know
Or don't release it
And we sure as hell ain't gonna talk about it

For example their elec grid and generation facilities are built by us or euro firms
I bet we could shut them down at will
Why give them a clue?
Save it for when you need it

Checking for ability to blackmail?

Nowadays you can get lots of information over a person, given you have basic data to begin with. Name, Address, Employer, telephone, SSID and banking information. Then you are able to find out a lot about this person. Check their credit information and you know about outstanding loans, car payments, boats, whatever. There is tons of information available, even just by googling it. Now take facebook, twitter and friends.

If they are real hackers, they are able to write code and automate much of it. Generating a huge database of profiles of people. Basically what the NSA does.

Then sort and rank as you wish to filter out what you need.

Way to much information out there, and often lousy secured.
