Ok, so I'm new to Diesels.

Manual tranny, 170k. The original owner is selling the car. He's told me that the car has not been regularly driven in many years, and he does not have service records for the car, but claims it was serviced locally. May need a battery.

Is this car worth buying? If so, what's it worth? A little help.....??

your not giving to much detials, like price, model. but... if the price is right then yeah if its a 240d i think 2500 or 3000 is a good price if the car is in good condition. theres somewhere on this forum where it walks you through how to start up diesel engins that havent been started in a while. Hope this helps

Without a full inspection it's not worth more than $1000 becuase you would have to assume you can spend $1500 in repairs on it in an instant. If it hasn't been started in years you may want to turn the engine over by hand with some ATF in the cylinders to prevent the engine rings from cracking. If there are no records assume that the miles indicated are merely for amusement.
