I posted this in the w220 forum by mistake so i'm reposting here now..

We currently own a 1989 420SEL(close to 170k mi), but we need a 'new' car. I know someone who wants to let go of their 1992 Dark Blue 500SEL with only about 40k miles on the odometer. It was mostly driven in hawaii, then was shipped to southern california over a year ago and has not seen much of the road. And it is in excellent condition and well maintained. The asking price is 25k.. and I think its negotiable. Is that a good deal? What is a good deal? And should I bite? Thanks a lot for the advice.
No more than 15K- I paid 34K for a 1995 S600 with 39,000 miles in perfect condition in July, 2001 for reference-I bought the car on e-bay. I am not sure weather the AC is R12 or 134a in 1992- if it is R12- it is going to be very very expensive to service- an easy 2K depending on problem- if may pay to conveert the system over to R134A- If the system is R134A- typical repair is around
$ 1,200.00 at the dealer.

STICK TO A S420 OR BETTER. 1994 AND UP......MAKE SURE THE A/C EVAPORATOR, VACUME ASSIST CONTROL UNIT HAVE BEEN REPLACED. ALSO HAVE A MERCEDES MECH LOOK IT OVER. IF YOU LIKE, GIVE ME A CALL AT 908-405-2192 FOR MORE INFORMATION...WHAT'S THE PRICE OF THE CAR YOU'RE CONSIDERING?

400SE A/C evaporator problems

Is it true that the evaporator units in W140s were changed in 1994, so that any 1994 or newer S class cars won't need the expensive repair for a leaking evaporator? I've heard differing opinions on this...can anyone help?
