Hey all, I found a '77 240d. Very Very clean, except for a few minor paint abnormalities and the front seats are pretty worn. He said he'd take $200 for it. LEt me explain:

It was an every day commuter , second owner, maintained regularly until NOV last year. At that point the car just all of a sudden died going down the road. The owner towed it to a Mercedes Dealership (Uh, they aren't the right guys to work on these cars, I think) and they told him the injector pump was bad and would need rebuilt and replaced.

I kind of found this hard to believe because I have read and been told that it was/is pretty rare for those to go out on these cars. Some people were saying sometimes they just need cleaned, retimed, or the fuel filters/screens replaced. But if it was the latter, wouldn't that have caused a gradual sluggishness, ending in a no start?

Other things I noticed were that the airconditioner belt looked snapped or cut and there was oil all over the block and head in the vicinity of the IP (front driverside).

I am not an expert, but do have a little mechanical background (used to fix up corvairs, yeah I know . . .). Selling my (the bank's) car and looking for a reliable commuter for my little family.

What do you think? Do you think it is the injector pump? I see them for $150 on Ebay, but the local Euro shop says it is $1600 to rebuild. What are the chances that I will be able to get it to run WITHOUT buying or rebuilding the IP? And if I can't, do you think I can part it out to cover what I bought it for?

for $200 you can easily make your money back parting it out, as long as everything is in decent shape

Thanks, maybe I'll go for it. How hard is it to replace that pump, anyone? It comes with the Some kind of service manual, as well as a neat book about the history of the Mercedes.

I just found a IP from a 220D. Will that work on this car? Anyone know? Am I being hasty in assuming it is the IP?

nope IP has to be for a 240D, OM616

probably not the IP, but you never know

find out where the oil came from, and you will most likely find your answer.

is the engine seized?

check the oil line's going to the IP

is there a reading on the dipstick?

changing the IP is not very hard

That's too bad, it is way cheaper than the others.

1) Engine is not seized the battery tdid not have full life but the engine did turn over

2) Engine oil was a little low but not to the add line.

3) I did see some oil around the lines going to the IP. If the oil came from there, is this a bad sign?

A/C belt isn't a big deal since it's a York and it should be separate from the alternator or the PSP.

Can you get a picture. Some engines looks filthy but it seem as if we're trying to determine whether or not a rod has been thrown or the block is cracked.

Unless the car was untouched it cannot be assumed that the oil level was where you saw it at when the car died on the road, the dealer may have added more oil.

Did you try starting it? Did it crank freely or hear any popping of partial compression when you inspected the car?

Oil around the IP lines isn't good, but a broken oil line would cause this and these are easy to repair. If the IP lost the lubricating oil it was getting, then the pump may be damamged but if you look around in wrecking yards you may find one. These are usually pretty reliable, but like anything that requires lubricant, if it doesn't get it then it could be history.

How many miles on the car?

Well, turns out the IP is shot. Only fuel going to one cylinder, which tells me the IP is not rotating. My personal opinion is that the pressure relief valve (I think) or something in the oil pump got stuck, it blew a line or soemthing and the IP stopped getting oil, and then toasted.

If it is there after this weekend I think I'll go back and test to see if fuel is even getting into the IP. If it is, I'll make a decision from there, if it is not, then maybe this is easier then I thought, new fuel delivery pump, tank screen?

I probably could get $200 just for parting it out, as I said body is straight, all trim is there and clean. But I am just not sure I have the time.

Yeah, you could part it out, but frankly even if the IP is toast, this is rare enough that you should be able to get a good IP from a wrecking yard! Timing these cars is not as difficult as you think and if the rest of the motor is OK then you shouild get your mileage out of it!:thumbsup:

If the IP is not rotating, but the rest of the motor is and the IP was starved for lubricating oil, then it is likely seized up and therefore toast. These are easier than you think to find however and I have a source for one of these in good used condition if you are interested.:thumbsup:

Hi. I saw somewhere in this thread that someone quoted $1500 to get the IP rebuilt. I don't know where that came from, but I just got my IP rebuilt for $650 at Atlas Diesel, a factory-authorized Bosch shop here in SoCal.
