hey guys i was on a trip a couple of weeks ago , actually i drove the same roads twice in a week, at 70 mph i hit a place in road crossing a bridge and the whole front end began to shimmy. i had to pull off the road. the next week same thing, same place. its the only time i've ever had this happen. just this one place on I-85 in SC. what do you think the problem could be?

It MIGHT be the bridge itself. We have a bridge on the 14 fwy here and when you go over it, it feels like your car is bucking like a bronco. In both directions. The car feels like you are crossing the wake of a big and fast boat. Up and down, up and down. It's a long bridge too, like 500 feet wide.

Do you notice if other cars do the same thing? On my bridge they all do. You see in front of you a wave of bucking cars.

Just the same, take your car in and have the front suspension checked. Just to be safe.

Used to happen to me when I hit 75 in my 81 SD. Corrected itself when I bought new tires... I guess they were out of balance.

Years ago in a different non-MB car I used to own, I hadn't tightened the lug nuts enough after my first brake job... yeah yeah I know but that happened at 15 MPH.

The steering shock is supposed to minimize that. Maybe yours is bad. I replaced mine at about 100K for that reason with significant results. Notice any unusal tire wear? Could be loose suspension joints also.

this bridge was very short maybe 50 feet. and the car continued to shake long after i had crossed it.i jacked it up today and i could move the right front wheel a little to the left and right and noticed that what looks like a tie rod end, next to the steering pitman arm, would wiggle just a hair. the steering shock also looked ancient. think i'll start here. thanks for your input.

Doesn't sound good so it's time for you to have someone look over your suspension parts. You may need various parts replaced.
