I have a 99 E320 rear drive.

Welcome, please click user cp and edit details to add your vehicle and location to your profile, it's useful information when you're seeking assistance.

By stuck, do you mean the lever won't move, or that you can move the lever but can't manually engage the lower gears?

Okay, then I'm officially confused.

"D" is as far as it can go, then it's left or right to select gears...at least on all the shifters I've seen.

How is yours set up? A pic might help, too.

Ah, pre-facelift, that's true. Good call.

Likely it's in the shifter mechanism, pop up the console and check it out.

Any work done recently on engine or transmission mounts?

Put shifter in D. Get under car. Loosen screw 99 (T27 Torx) shake shifter rod (63) to relieve tension and tighten screw. Check condition of shifter linkage bushings.
