I have a 2002 ML320 that won't shift out of park (without a bic pen)... It was a situation that occurred once, then went away, came back and now is here to stay. That leads me to believe there is a loose connection somewhere.

The brake lights function without issue. There are no dash lights on to indicate brake switch failure. Also, the dash shift lever indicator functions correctly as well. No issues with the manual shifting either.

I've pulled the console apart, removed the shift unit. I've inspected the solenoid and it does function when powered externally. I've taken the shift unit fully apart, inspecting a little further, everything looks solid. I was not able to get as deep into the shift lever location electronics as I wanted... I'm thinking the problem may still be in there.

The wife says there was no water spilled on the console and I see no indication of that.

So, i'm kinda stuck. I'm thinking that i'll remove the safety until I can find a replacement unit as, I've hit the wall with what I can do without buying new parts. Do you think the issue is withing the shift unit electronics?

Is there anything else you guys can think of to check? Thanks for reading!

Brake light switch has two sets of contacts NC (normally closed) for shifter and traction control, NO (normally open) for brake lights. Have you checked them both. Switch is only $20 so replacing it is easier.

With dedicated MB scanner you can command shifter to unlock without pulling anything apart. You can watch both states of brake light switch as well.

I'll check the switch more closely. I don't have a scanner... The top cable has two wires, and appeared to control the brakes (If I remember correctly).

Thanks for the tips!

I am very happy to announce that replacing the switch has resolved my issues. Thanks for very much for making me second guess it. I had written it off as most report the dash light along with their issues. Thanks again!
