shifter nob is loose and comes off

i have an aftermarket momo wood knob...it comes right off..then i see a chrome shaft with no end pieces, clips, retainers, nothing...so no wonder it comes right off, what is the original like, and how do aftermarket knobs usually get hold on? thanks.
