Yes. Fiber Optic lines from the octopus behind the ACC control/console wood. Octopus = Round plastic bulb holder with several fiber optic lines feeding the lights in the ACC console wood switches and shifter.
I was just in there and could not see the fiber optic line, the top row of switches had a bulb but I could not find where to put it and could not find the optic line and this is on my 85 SEC any one have pictures?
it's possible that the line from the shift gate is disconnected at the octopus; it's one long piece (it can't disconnect from the shift indicator itself since it's permanently attached to it). the octopus also feeds lights to all top buttons above the climate control (except the hazard switch, it has a bulb of its own). the little black wires that connect into the top of each of the buttons is the fiber optic light source. if none of the top switches light up then the bulb is burned out; if it's just the shift indicator then it's probably disconnected at the octopus
My 91 300 SEL has a single bulb. I replaced it when I bought the car 14 years ago. My 89 SEC needs it done and I have been doing with-out since I bought that one 3 years ago. I seem to recall it was a pita.
Yes the gen 1 uses the octopus. If there is not a line feeding down below the shifter its possible some PO removed it for reasons unknown. Hopefully its still there but bunched up behind the ash tray or climate control panel.
