hi everyone I just got a 1961 404.113-017276 it’s a hicab hardtop with a Peter Bauer box on the back built, I believe, for Deutsche bundespost. I’m having trouble figuring out the shifters. Is it possible that it’s an automatic? The main shifter lever only has three positions, forward, middle and rear, it’s mounted to the large oil fill reservoir in such a way that there’s no side to side movement so it doesn’t appear to be able to make the normal two low/four high shift pattern. There is a clutch and I’m wondering if it’s some sort of strange manual/auto setup. Has anybody seen anything like this? Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Pics to follow later today. Also any fleas on the best way to turn the engine by hand? I’ve removed the radiator for access and the fan spins freely in front of the crankshaft and I can’t get any tools on the crank to turn it to make sure the engine isn’t seized.

Block the front wheels, jack up one of the rear wheels, put the transmission in 6th and turn the rear wheel by hand... Of course that depends on figuring out the shifter, I don't recall anyone ever mentioning an automatic in a 404 base before.
Thanks choprboy I’ll give that a go if I can figure out how to get it in gear.

You can not push the mail lever sidewards if the forward-reverse lever is not in
forward position.
If not possible, move the powertrain.
You have to lift the rear left wheel and to turn it.
The differntial lever has to be set off.

Thanks mag mog gonna try that today. I saw a photo with a setup that looks like mine with arrows and numbers but alas, no key to what’s what. There’s a front pto so I’m assuming that two of the levers are for that. I’ll take some pics today and post on this thread and hopefully someone will have something similar and can enlighten me. I’ve been wrenching on an m715 for 20 years but this unimog is a whole other level of complexity. Also have ordered the service manual so that may help allay the dumber questions. Thanks for your help for a slightly overwhelmed newbie.

Ok feeling a bit dumb. The whole gearshift assembly pivots inside that tube. On the plus side I got it worked through all the gears but got rained out before I could jack up the rear wheel and turn the engine over so that’s for the next trip. Thanks for the pointers!
