Does anyone know how to fix or where I can find a new one of these little screen things. It is the thing that follows the shifter that covers the hole.

How do I get the console off to look at it.

I have a 1997 S420.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago. I do remember having to buy the part at the MB dealership parts department. I had to remove the center wood surrounding the shifter assembly and pry open the gear selector part and remove the shift knob to install the new part. I'm not for sure, but I think the gear selector cover comes as a sub part for the selector assembly. I can not remember the price, but I think it was around $50.

Follow the link below for information on how to remove the center wood. I posted the removal instructions a couple of days ago for another owner of an S-Class. There might be someone here that has removed the shifter assembly without removing the center wood, but in my case, I had to remove the surrounding wood.

After you remove the center wood, you will see plastic fastners on the sides of the sifter assmebly. Be careful, but pry the cips and lift stright up.

You don't live very far from Tulsa! I grew up in Blytheville, AR.

Go see Shuler AutoHaus and ask them ...

Shuler does a very top notch job in Fayetteville, and they are always open to good questions on site...

A luxury as compared to most other parts of the country...

I have the same problem, but have not found a solution yet.
I guess we will have to remove the whole shifter assembly
from the car and deassemble it. (you have a 722.6, which
is same as mine, and more difficult than the 722.3/4/5)

http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=141590&highlight=shutter

and here are the parts drawing (not same numbers as the previous
link);

And, please remember, your console wood is a one-piece design,
and harder to remove than the two-piece.

BTW, it is called a "shutter".

br,
syljua, who will try to replace this spring...
