Hey guys I am looking into replacing the shift knob on my 380sl to a wooden knob but I don't want to just buy the knob and end up having to take it to a shop to get it done. Has anyone replaced their knob before and know if it is easy or how I can do it?

Thanks for anything!

I have the original leather knob in my '86 300 SL and was wondering if it's easier to just cut the old one off the shaft and replace it with another brand.

Thing is that I only see wooden knobs and would prefer something in leather.

BTW - the part no. I get in the EPC is B66268103 and wonder if its the same for other R 107s ?

It's not as easy as you might think. After you lift the center console you have to unscrew the 3 screws that secure the shifter housing. Then, you need to remove the rubber boot that covers the nut, that connects the shifter to the linkage.. The tricky part is not screwing up the linkage when you loosen that nut to unlock the shifter. Which is what I did..The linkage flops around loosely.
When I put it all back together, my shifter linkage was off by about 1/4 inch. I had to have my mechanic adjust it. If I had had him do it first, it would have taken him about 1/2 hour.
I'll add that if you're at least a novice mechanic, it should be an easy job. ( I'm not !)
Otherwise it can be a frustrating project..

I have done it on my 500 and 560 and did not have the problem you describe. Very simple job.

I have an extra shaft so I was thinking about this one for the '73.
