I think I broke something the other night but i dont know what. Friday night I drove downtown and the car was fine. I went to leave and I noticed that the engine had developed a terrible shudder in drive and there was no acceleration at all. When I first hit the gas the vibration gets real bad and the car barely wants to go. As the engine speed increases, it kinda smoothes out but it still isnt performing normally. Any suggestions of what it could be?

Sounds like the symptoms my wife experienced when one of the plug wires was arcing on the valve cover. The coating had come off due to age and thus the car would barely start and only when enough RPMs were reached would it smooth out.

Mine did something similar when the HT lead had come loose from the distributor. It then cut out completly when the lead came off totally. So its worth checking your leads incase its something simple. What car is it? engine, transmisson etc

Its an 89 2.6 automatic

Like the guys above said it sounds like an ignition problem. Check the wires, the distributer and the plugs. They are all really easy to check.

also check the rotor inside the the distributer.
