I saw an interesting car today while heading to home depot. A beautiful two tone blue SEL 600 that had an AMG trunk badge and period correct AMG wheels.

Did pre-merger AMG have a program for the W140? If so, what were the upgrades?

You could take any Mercedes to an independent AMG shop and have any number of things done to it. The shops were more common in the 1980s, but several stuck around in business through the 90s. This is much more common on early R129s than W140s, but the typical package was the 'AMG kit', or more commonly 'AMG Gen 1', which was a body kit. You got an AMG front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper, 3-piece spoiler, and AMG-branded 3-piece wheels made by OZ. There were several hundred or maybe thousand AMG Gen 1 R129s, typically SL500s, sometimes SL320s or SL600s. I owned a Gen 1 SL600.

Most likely, the 600 you saw was a W140 equivalent 'Gen 1'. Cars with actual AMG powertrain modifications are far rarer and typically better documented. It was also far more expensive to do - I believe at least three to four times so.

Interesting and great info. I’ll have to stop by and take a closer look at this car. It may just have been badged.

600SEL (this will be model years 1992 and 1993) do exist, but are extremely rare, and as already pointed out, the AMG moding involves an "appearance package". Like this one:

Nice! Also listed on Hemmings:

Rare 4-seater but it is unclear if the engine is indeed AMG tuned - if so, cannot be "just" 394 HP, or it only has the body kit.
The cars that had engine mods had enlarged engine displacement and rarely maintain their 600SEL or S600 badges

A 600SEL AMG all it has is the Front Bumper - Rear Bumper & Side Skirts ( same like what my friend Ilhan purchased here ) without engine modifications , by my records there was no AMG Trunk badge that came with these , only the 7.0L& up .
The Brabus 600SEL however had the same except the Engine was bored to 6.9L not the 7.0L AMG & it had a Brabus exhaust .
Attached link shows the 6.9l Brabus with Lorinser Body kit ( how weird ) .

Engine
Type: 48 valve, V12
Displacement: 6871 cc
Max horsepower: 509 BHP at 5750 rpm
Max torque: 705 Nm at 3700 rpm

If it looks like this ,then it's a normal 6.0L M120 with AMG Body kit .

509bhp and all that torque! That's absolutely bonkers for back then and pretty bonkers even now tbh.
