hi. i'm back needing your sage advice (again). i'll make it short ,,, please respond.

what is a fair price (i know, i know, subjective) for a 91 420 sel as follows: 62,000 miles. cleaner than death. all records. new brakes, good tyres. one owner. clean carfax.

private party (i.e., not mercedeshowroom - but as clean as a car from mercedeshowroom!!) transaction.

as you can see, i'm still (four months now!) on the good and righteous path of trying to find a good clean w126 without getting raped on price!!

(snibble -- you've been spot on w/r/t pricing recently ,,, i'd love to hear from you -- or pm me with what you paid recently for your new 560)

any advice gratefully received. cheers. ///ajm

ajm,

In my humble opinion if you are able to acquire that car as you have described it for less than $10,000 you should consider yourself fortunate.

If you decide against the car please let me know where it is located. I would be very interested in it.

You have to check to see what they’re selling for in your area. In most of Florida, for example, the car you described would go for about $7500.
If you can find cars like that for that price... you would be doing a killing if you were to post them online or on ebay. Your $7500 tag is usually for cars with 95,000-100,000+ miles. Not one with half those miles.

Last week I drove my friends' 124,000 miles, 420 SEL from 89, and it was much worse than mine which is 213,000 miles.

I think it is wrong to think a car is better because it has low miles.

A year ago I bought a car for my wife with a 37,000 miles (Korean make). It was still under warranty, however it started to fall apart and I had to go to a dealership for repairs once a month.

I had few sensors replaced, axels gone, bearings in the front, some plastic elements, bulbs, water pump, belt tensioners (both - one for the serpentine and the other for timing) EGR valve and some other minor issues.

I do not believe a car to be better because of the mileage. It is wrong.

First,you can't compare a Korean make to a w126 mercedes.

Second, a car has to be WELL MAINTAINED. If a car with 124,000 miles feels worse than a car with 200,000+ miles, then the car was definately not well maintained. You can't say that the cars get better with more miles.

A car thats maintained with LOW MILES will always command a much much higher premium over a car that has 200,000+ miles with all records from day one.

I personally treat cars with 250,000+ miles with a brand new engine just like a 250,000+ mile car. It will never be worth the same as one with an original low milage engine... eventhough its should be better.
