Hello,
I have a 93' 400E and can use some odds and ends, interior and exterior. There is a local mechanic that specializes in German auto repairs and has a lot filled with Mercs.

I need an intsrument cluster and was courious to know if getting them second hand would be wise?

Would appreciate any feed back...
Cheers...

What is the shop's name? Maybe someone here has dealt with it before.

As a rule with instrument clusters you are suppose to have a Certified Speedometer or Repair shop replace those since you would be changing the mileage on your car with the change of the cluster. Without the accompanying sticker/certification you can run into problems during registration or sell of the car if it were to show up will less miles than the DMV currently believes it to have. That would result in an immediate Salvage title in many states.

As for other parts, getting used parts such as interior or exterior parts would be a great way to save money. Just make sure you are getting parts that function properly and you are all set. There is no need to pay for new door panels, as an example to replace one torn one if you can get a used one. The used one will probably match better anyway.

I believe BBA-Reman can rebuild your instrument cluster if they don't have one in stock.

Thanks, I appreciate the feed back.
As for the instrument cluster, It is just the cluster containing the Oil pressure, Fuel gage, and Engine temp. On my panel the Oil pressure gage is screwy, as well I believe the fuel gage is also. Once the car reaches normal operating temp, the oil gage cuts out. The sending unit is fine and the engine doesn't leak or have any noises, or burn through oil.
As for the shops name, I can't remember. They are located in Huntersville NC. The only MB and BMW specialist around. They have many vehicles in the back lot and are always busy. Seem like they are a good place.

Have you tried the Pull-a-Part on North Tryon? Parts there are CHEAP! The last time I was there, I remember seeing W124 cars, but don't think any were new as '94. I wasn't looking for 124 cars, so I wasn't paying a lot of attention. Worth a look, though. They get new European inventory in about once a month.

If you are looking for a left cluster it is not just a plug and play R&R. it will require either a send off to a repair service or panel replacement [see above]. The back of the panel is not just a single unit that plugs in, it is very old school wired.

How many miles are on your car?

A pick your part in Charlotte... I never knew. I'll have to give it a look since I'm not to far away. I was told there is a place called Parts Depot in Highpoint NC that only has Mercs. I was thinking of makeing a day trip out of it and see what they have as well.

My car has 173,849miles on her. Pures like a kitten and runs like a beast...

So the instrument cluster is going to be a pain in the arse. What would be the cause for the oil pressure gage to quit working after the car warms? I was told by the dealer master mechanic that it wasn't the sending unit but the cluster alone. The temp gage works fine and I have noticed that the fuel gage has jumped around once in a while when it gets close to empty. I have been refuling with about 3 galons remaining and haven't seen the reserve light come on yet. How much of a reserve do I have?

Cheers...
