Hi everybody,

I have been away overseas for a while but I'm back and again able to enjoy my SL. In thr meantime I have been able to fix the heat by installing a new aluminium servo. I'm so happy to have heat that I had a drive with the top down this morning as it was a beatifull but freezing day!!!

On another note, I'm in the process of removing my 107 SL seats

I removed the 4 bolts for the passenger side but the seat still won't budge. The rails seem to still be attached at some centerpoint as I can list up the front of the seat and the rear of the seat, I just can't get the entire seat to lift. It seems to be pivoting on a centerpoint along the rail attached to the sill under the door.

Any ideas???

Thank you

Regards

Damien

I'm assuming your 500SL has the same, or similar seats to my '82 380SL. There are 6 bolts holding my seats in place. 4 in back on the sliding bracket and one per side up front that the assembly pivots on. You can only get to the front ones with the seat all the way back. My seats were stuck when I got my car so they were a lot of fun to get out. Once all the bolts are out, the seat sits on a lift bar under the middle and it can get caught on that. You have to wiggle it (<-----fancy technical term) to get it loose but once it's loose, the seat assembly will come right out. Once you do it a couple of times, while not easy, it isn't that bad to work on.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the help. The passenger seat is now off. I was missing the screw you were talking about inside the track.

I'm still struggling with the driver seat. I removed the screws on the front.
On the back of each track (driver side) there are there are 2 screws (do I need to remove the second one? See pics) and a black plastic handle -see pics- I don't know what to do with. Do I need to remove it?

Yours looks a little different than my seats. I removed the tracks and all when I took mine out. The handle looks like the height adjustment. Mine is a little different but M-B is good (or bad) about making running changes. I also don't see the bar the seat sits on and raises it up or lowers it. I made the mistake once of removing the spring on that puppy. I got it back but it's one serious spring.

On each track, there will be two bolts in the rear and one in front. The pivoting bar will stay in the car. I'd remove the tracks and when you reinstall the seats, install them as an assembly. There are all sorts of plastic sliders. These keep the seat from rattling. If I get a chance, I'll take some pictures of mine to show you how it's supposed to sit. My height adjustment mechanisms were full of crud and locked in place. I took them apart and cleaned everything and now I can't imagine the seats without them.

I won't pull the seats though as I'm selling my car and I'd like a prospective buyer to be able to drive it.

Hi all,

Thank you for your help.

I removed the bolts on the front of the tracks and those that were in the middle of each track. I can move up the all seat + tracks as an assembly but it is still attached to the car by the back of the tracks.

I suppose I need to remove the two black handles you can see on the pics but I don't know how. They don't want to rotate and when I try to pull them...same result.

I'm not sure I have a height adjustment mechanism. I didn't see anything on the passenger seat which is now out of the car.

I hope someone with the same system will be able to help.

Those handles are the early style seat height adjusters. On my '78, only the driver's seat was adjustable. Turning the handles rotates an eccentric cam in the track, raising or lowering the assembly. IIRC, when turned to the correct position a mounting screw is revealed.

I think you pull out on the handles to unlock and then turn them??

It's been a long time.

Hi Dave,

You are definitely right!!! Reading other answers I understand now most of you were right.

I just went into the garage to have a look (my wife is now sure i'm crazy) and I have been able to rotate the handle. It was stucked for not having being used for many years. I forced a little bit with a lever and it pop out and rotate

I will be able to remove the all thing!

Thanks all of you for your help

When I cleaned and reassembled my seat mechanisms, I found that 3 in 1 motor oil is perfect to lube it and stay on the metal.

Ok, are there screws under the handles?

I am trying to remove the driver's seat from my 74 SLC, and I have the track handles picture in this thread. I have been able to rotate the handles but that has not done anything. I must have misread a lot of this thread.
So is the summary that I have to remove 6 screws and turn the handles?

Rotating the handle raises and lowers the seat height.

At some point during the turn of the adjuster the aft most of the three track retaining bolts per side can be accessed. Don't remember if it's all the way up, or all the way down.

Thanks. I saw that there's a notch in the metal part below the height adjuster knob. I guess that's what exposes the screw. I'll give it a shot today.
I also still need to find those "middle" screws mentioned in this thread.

It's the mid-point, with the handle pointing straight up and down.
