Seat Back Adjuster - Misaligned

2394 Views 31 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  nobby
Hi all,

In a quest to make myself fit better into my 79 450SL I was turning the seat adjuster knob and the seat became misaligned.

I.E - The left side of the backrest is more forward than the right side. :(

Does anyone have any advise and it appears to be not turning the gear. I sprayed some penetrating lube on the gear itself in hopes of freeing it up but didn't have any luck.

Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks!

If your is like the one in my 380SL, it has a square metal rod that reaches from the knob side to the other side. The square rod fits into a receiver on both sides and enables you to adjust both sides using the knob. When you get into the back of the seat, move the rod out of the knob side, turn the knob side until it is all the way toward the front. Then use the rod and a pair of pliers to move the other side all the way to the front. when both sides are all the way forward, then reinsert the rod into both the knob side and the other side. This should enable you to adjust both sides equally using the knob.
Thanks for the info everyone! I'm going to give it a go this weekend. It's seriously cold here at the moment

I'll let you know how I make out. :)

I also found loosing the hinge without the knob makes moving the square tube easier. It is held by 2 screws that can be a pain to loosen (sometimes locktite is used on the screws). I found a #3 screwdriver bit, 1/4 inch socket, and a 1/4 inch rachet makes the job easier. I did not take the screws out completely. I loosened them enough so the square tube would move from side to side. Hope this helps.
