I bought 2 ATS AMG wheels from Fonzi. Thanks Mike.
One one of the wheels there is what appears to be a blue rubber sealant on the back all around the circumference. None of my other wheels have ad this. I have removed most of it but shot this pic before finishing removal.
Neither Fonzi nor I have any idea what the purpose was.
Crack seal? Why on the out side? Weird balancing technique?

I can't find any. I guess that will be revealed when I put a tire on it and air it up. Planning on using this one as a spare with one of my takeoff tires. Going to try mounting just for grins next week.

I like the dust cover glue guess. It felt like silicone to me, but kind of looked like blue masking tape.

Of course eventually a tire will go on and you will determine if there are any leaks. The tires were holding air when I had them removed, three matching 1986 Pirelli tires in two gen1 and one gen2. They were filthy on the inside, that one with the blue seal being the dirtiest on the inside. I think it had to be a front on that 126 on which it was installed once upon a time. I think they guy thought the gen2 were rear wheels or something. He couldn't recall what happened to the forth. He also forced me to take an unused bundt spare with me. Anyone want that?

Tire mounted and aired up. Soapy mixture applied and slowly rotated. No bubbles. I guess it will remain a mystery. Don't think it was dust covers because the sealant was at max. 3/4" from the front to back and the wheel mounting surface is inset more than that. Dust shields I have pulled are pretty much parallel to the mating surface.

That silicone application on the outside would hardly be sufficient to hold airtight a fart in a can, let alone 2-3 bar pressure.
If silicone was applied on the inside... maybe. On the outside... nope.

Dust shields I have pulled are pretty much parallel to the mating surface.
not a rule.. I've seen them in a frying pan shape. W201's with gullideckels have them in a pizza tray shape

I remember plastic seat covers in cars. Nasty sticky things on bare skin.
Last ones I remember were on Grandpa's 1956 Chevy BelAire 4dr Sedan and were a clear plastic.

Car wore out but the seats were pristine, but that was before I had to worry about the bare skin issue. :D
