Hopefully the portal will come back for the weekend, I know there is an o ring seal to keep any lubricants from escaping, but he mating surface between te portal and axle housing, is there anything that neds to be put there? Seems like a large area where water can get in and rust, or is I just painted from the outside?

Are you referring to where the Portal Bolts to the Axel tube?

If so,I used Silicone when I replaced the Portal on my U1000.

using a bit of sealant would not hurt. the later portals only used sealant with no o-rings.

I've always used Loctite 5920 with mine, never had a weep so far.
