So anything on the mercedes list of approved oil is well a pain to obtain, and costly. Just like the rest of it.

I know the 404 trans have yellow metals. And need gl4

does the sbu fall in this category?
Will a 75 90 gear oil work?
Gl 4 and gl 5 be ok?

With all the oil options something must work locally
Thanks

I'm using Castrol Syntrans.
Dave search this forum, they've been many discussions on that matter already.

guude,

take care of oil without copper corrsion, GL4 and 5 says noting about even if oilspecialists tell so.
the synchronisation rings are made out of brass.
make a piece of cooper shiny, put it into the oil and heat it for an hour to ~ 80°C.
if copper is still as shiny as before it's ok.

gut 404! justus.

Hi Dave--my BW-U1300 has a brand new tranny in it from the MERZ factory---it came with 75W-90,- GL4 lube--"dino oil"-- from MERZ. Did not have Syntrans in it. It will work just fine. The MERZ book even lists 10Wt motor oil for BW trannys. I plan to change it out to the new 0-50 gear oil we are running in our Eaton Fuller trannies that our Peterbilts have.
Is essentially a GL4 75W-90.

Valvoline makes a gl 4 gl 5 combo. Seems reasonable for me

Even the book is pretty vauge it just list, 80, 75 90, etc. no real specifics. and as you said tlane 10 w motor oil.

To be honest I feel like I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

If it can take 75 90 or 10w motor oil...it can't be to picky right.

Dave

Dave--go to your local Peterbilt or Freightliner dealership and they will have the new 0-50
gear oil--is an upgraded 75-90 GL-4 (can't run GL-5 for obvious reasons due to brass in trannies) It is good stuff and is rated for 9 through 18 speed Eaton Fuller trans on the big rigs.
DELo--Shell-Mobil--etc all have it. Our Peterbilts have upwards to 2,5 million miles on them and trannies have never been repaired--we have been using DELO 75-90 GL-4 but are changing to this new 0-50.

The Castrol Syntrans is High Dollar---not needed.---In my own humble opinion--:)
