13 pages...13 pages of pictures of SBU's, and I couldn't find any pictures like this. :surrender:

I'm looking for more pictures of this style fire box, I *think* the box sides fold down into steps, but I'm not sure. Anybody have any pictures of a regular cab style firebox like this would you? (I realize the pop top isn't standard)

Oh, and Truckor, your PM box is full ;)

TREV,

I've loads of photos of that box, steps down, etc etc. It is an RW-1 configuration. The POP-TOP is not standard, that is a modification that Martin
did to his (HELLGETH, actually) as part of his camper conversion.

I'm super swamped, but here are some photos.

Bob's U1300L with the Alaskan camper on it started life as a RW-1, and it was converted to a bed by chopping the top of the box off. Here are a few more of that process on a different truck.

Two ARE Bob's truck....

I have seen 4 or 6 of them on German E-bay, and I believe MEREX had one, but it has been a while. They were reasonably priced.

The UNIMOG-based RW-1 was a standardized Rescue Vehicle and hundreds
(if not thousands) of them were (and are) in service throughout Germany.

Many of the smaller Fire departments are keeping theirs and have no need to replace them, but the UNIMOG RW-1 is being replaced in many fire departments by a larger version, often based on a MAN truck. More of the UNIMOG based trucks are showing up on the used market.

So, I'd check the leading dealers in Germany, since the box is so specialized, it is sometimes taken off of the truck and the truck is re-configured with a pritsche. It makes a good truck : low miles, good maintenance, high speed axles (mainly), and a nice underslung winch. Sometimes the winch is a very expensive ROTZLER TREIBMATIC. I know of an Ex-Rw-1 that was in great shape, low miles, and it sat for many months at a dealership waiting for a buyer. It was priced at about the original price of the Rotzler winch alone, and they still had a hard time selling it...So sometimes the RW-1 Box sits on the lot waiting for a buyer...

Happy Hunting.

I really like that side step design, slightly more utility than the typical ladder step, would make a great addition to a somewhat smaller traditional utility body.

I've seen just the sides/steps for sale on E-bay as well. when somebody builds a camper on an Ex-RW-1, it all goes to the side, except for Martin, who built his within the RW-1 box....a camper hiding in a firetruck.

Some photos of Martin's project.

That is the Werner variation of the RW-1 winch. The cable exits a fairlead in the front bumper, but by "grabbing the bight", it can be used out the rear as well.

The ROTZLER is different, and it is a superior set-up, with a price to match,
usually.

There were 4 or 5 different manufacturers of the RW-1 body, so you will see
small differences in trim, the rooftop rails and some of the tread plate, but they are all very similar. Rosenbauer, Ziegler, Wackenhut, and I think two more that I know of.....But I can't recall at the moment. Lentner is another one....OH, and METZ is another.

I'm not sure if I have close-ups of the hinge system...maybe ?
