while getting ready to install the drive shaft between the bell housing and the trans, my buddy told me i need to offset the u-joints (in other words, place the splined part so that the u joints are 90 degrees off from eachother) to avoid bad vibes....i dont think ive ever heard of this....im sure most of you know if this needs to be done. thanks, kris

its only done IF the drive shaft dose not have markings to line up (i.e. arrows etc) or a spline that stops you placing it in the wrong way, if you havent pulled the shaft apart yet and you didnt have bad vibes befor then dont do it, as it would have been balanced at the factory how it was, if you need to pull it apart put your owne markings on it prior to taking it apart to make shore you put it back how it was.

also check the bolt that holds the flange on the bell housing is not lose, as thay sometimes come lose and cause play in the flange etc, use thread lock

UHH, What type of drive shaft. Ohh, sorry just reread. From what I know, the shaft between the motor and tranny has a very straight shot. If I am correct, that means that the Ujoints in technicality can be out of phase and will not cause vibes. So, it all depends on the angles associated with the shaft.

im thinking ill just send it back for a rebalance...and mention this shaft spin 2800 rpm.

As a side note I installed 45 degree grease zerks on the u-joints so they can be greased once in a while. Just take the plug out of the center and replace with a metric fitting.

sdo, great idea about replacing the zerks with a 45 zerk. ...but im not sure what you mean about the plug. im assuming i just cant unscrew the original and replace with a 45?

SDO jr. here, there's a plug in the center of the u-joint, at least on mine. So if you put a 90 or 45 zerk, it will point outward so you could grease it with the driveshaft in place. I think it's 8mm maybe.

ah got it....mine had zerks in place...90s....i wonder if a 45 would takr grease easier? im planning in putting the shaft in in a few days. can i get a metric zerk at napa?

I would think so, I got mine at ACE hardware. A 45 is easier on the tranny side, but a PITA to install.
