just bought an e320 avantgared 2003 50000 mls.
I am getting a distinctive intermittent electric motor sound when I am turning & braking at slow to moderate speed. Could this be the SBC pump & is this normal

Sounds like the SBC pump & it is quite normal. Fortunately I was told by my car's previous owner about it, I can understand being worried if you are not aware of it.

The SBC Pump will vibrate as it pressurizes. This feels to me like a strong cell phone vibration (when the cell phone rings while it is set to vibrate) and you can feel it on the brake pedal as well as hear it from the engine compartement when outside the car when you unlock the doors. It lasts a few seconds and then stops every time it pressurizes.

If this is what it feels like then i think that is normal.

I would describe the SBC pump sound more like a buzzing compressor noise and yes it can start and run at any given moment it chooses from opening the driver's door to while in route, turning, stopping, starting, sitting,.....

If it all checks out and has good fluid then the vibration can be mitigated by having the
dealer install the SBC damper kit. It does make a difference.
