It was a bad car weekend for me. Issues with other cars besides my
New 2003 SL55

Had the car sitting in the garage with the top open. Decided to close her up
And the trunk opens top lifts to the first posistion. Pack position I believe it's called. Pumps runs seems to be trying to lift the top
But if wouldn't go.

Fluid level in the pump looks good and I do not see any
Obvious leaks.

I did some research that suggests possibly micro
Switch S117 may have an issue that can cause this to happen.

I did close the top via the manual procedure and
Wow what a pita that is.

Any suggestions or ideas please ?

I do not have a scan tool what is the go to these days for the
Cheap version ?

Here are a couple files that have really helped me.
FYI - I solved the S117 issue, and I've had the front latch replaced, and filled the pump reservoir, and replaced a pneumatic spring on my top. Getting better at fixing this beast!

Can you tell me how to access the s117 switch ?
Not sure what trim needs to come off.

Page 1 thru 3 of the "Roof Cable..." describes the process, but there are no pictures...sorry.
The left side driver door jam has a silver plate at top with (4) Torx 20 screws; there is one more T20 under the lateral hinging cover (open the roof part way); and an 8mm bolt (just loosen it - don't remove it) under the small hinged flap.
Plastic part then gets pulled up to un-snap the catches. At this point you can see the S117.
Search for "S117 pictures" and hopefully you can find something.
Ask if you have more questions.

What is the purpose of the tubing ? It isn't clear if it is to hold the switch closed all the time ? Or is it to make the contact surface thicker to engage the switch ?

Yes, the parts you described. Second attachment previous post have written instructions and some pictures.
The hose is to activate the switch. It is not being closed by the little lever...hose makes it close.

Thanks. Have you used icarsoft ?
Seems to be mixed reviews on how well it works.
I have not used iCarsoft myself, but I know many who have and for the ability to read codes from all systems, it's the east expensive option.

I use SDS, but that's not for everyone. The cost is higher and requires some computer and diagnostic skills to use.

I Located the S117 switch last night.
Someone had already been in there for sure. No tubing
In place though. I did add the tubing but didn't open the roof
Yet. I have icarsoft coming today so I can actually pull the codes
I really do not want to go thru the manual operation of the
Top again. That's quite a pain and a bit dangerous really.

I bought an iCarsoft model i980 recently (Amazon, $120) in order to resset my AC controller so I could recharge the system. It worked fine for that. Played around with it while basking in the cool air. It checks 33 different controllers for errors, lists any code #'s found, has a lookup for definitions of the codes, and in many cases allows you to monitor the status of various circuits in real time, showing the status of switches and knobs on the screen as they operate (or as you operate them). I'm not sure if it can see the details of the roof operation, but it would not surprise me if it did. I would recommend this gadget (or the newer model with a bigger screen for about $150) for anyone with an SL or any MB who is even slightly interested in the operational details of the car.
