I recently bought a S600, as I always liked Mercedes and have been reading this forum with great interest.

I have a problem with battery drain, probably due to that the Bose amp dosent seem to shut off, I have a hissing sound in my speakers which comes and goes. Also the Becker Mexico stereo is not functioning, it displays ERROR 2 only. So if I leave the car for five days, it wont start.

But the real accident happend today. I read somewhere that the Webasto (aux heater) should be used at least once a month, so I decided to try it for the first time. I switched the ignition on, everything was just fine. I set the clock on the Webasto and pressed the "flame"-button which turned green light on for a minute and then it displayed an "F", which is an error message. So then I tried to start the car, and then the car went crazy, the instrument cluster started to flash, ticking sounds from everywhere, nothing responded, when I closed the door it opened again, the windows wasnt functioning, nothing!

The ticking sounds come from the vacuum pumps among other things, and with every ticking sound the instrument cluster and other lights, flashed, like it was not enought power.

Now I have the battery disconnected. I guess the aux heater caused a short circut somewhere.

Anyone have ideas where to start searching? Could it be bad for the car to try to start it with start cables?

Well I'd check the voltage from the battery first. Plus fix the radio, Becker will rebuild it, and if you look on the internet there are other people who will rebuild the radio too. Mutliple draining your battery flat will at some point kill it.

Certainly if your battery is > 5 years old it's time to replace it. If you don't know how old it's possible by looking at the battery serial number to ask the vendor when it was made. I had a varatec battery in my 92 300TDt which varatec was kind enough to tell me the production date of.

Aux heater or Webasto as its also called, is the small "computer" to the right top of the AC controls, which some W140 has. Its a display with a clock. You can program it to heat up the engine and coupe.

I disconnected the battery yesterday and connected it 15 minutes later, but it was no difference. But after have been disconnected whole night, it is working again. The car behaves as it should.

But its still strange...

Option Code No. 228 (Additional Heater) was available as a convinience feature for M.B. cars who had to spend the night outside on extremely cold climates. The system could be programmed or remotely started to heat the engine and the car interior previous of starting the engine.

The option was mostly ordered by extreme climate countries like Sweden, Iceland, etc. Some used cars imported here from Europe came with the aformentioned option. Being in the tropics, the dealer and most independent techs just disconneted the system.

I don't know if where you are located you really need such feature, but if you don't, just forget about it. As with the W124 4matic, the rear A/C unit on W140s and some other unsual optional equipments, the Additional Heater is a real pain in terms of reliability.

Actually I live in Sweden :)

So sometimes the heater would be convinient...

I will have a look at its fuel pump as soon as I can, it located near the ordinary fuel pump.
Välkommen hit! :)

The strange thing that happend to your car is probably due to bad battery. Whit low voltage all kind of strange thing can happend. Hi, hi... I´ve been there. lol.

Replace the battery but also fix the radio/amp problem because every time you discharge the battery you loose power and soon the battery is worn again.

The "F" message in the display showing after about 1-2 minutes is most likely the small fuel pump located beside the engine fuel pump rear coverd by a plastic cover.

The pump can be opened in both ends and inside the pump there is a small "membran" (right word?) that use to get stuck bacause the heater hasnt been used for a while. Just press the "membran" to get it loose, mount it back and use the heater every day the first 2 weeks just to "execise" it. The heater is very, very effective and is a great option when the car has been standing outside during the winter and no power nearby to the electrical pre heater. :)
