i've got an '03 S55 i intend to drive through the MA winter.

stock tire sizes are 245/45 front and 265/40 rear (18").

the manual suggests going with 245/45 all-around, as does the tirerack site. i'd prefer to avoid the cost of a set of new rear rims.

the Blizzak LM-22 tire comes in 245/45 (woo hoo!) for the fronts, but not in a 265/40 for the rears. however, it does come in a 265/35 size.

curious to hear why this would be better or worse than going with replacement rims to do 245/45 on the rear.

Re:

you can run a 245/45-18 on all four of your OE wheels but be careful when installing them because your rear wheels are .5" wider than your front wheels

luke:

running a 245 tire on a 265 rim would be a better solution than running 265/35s on the rears instead of the stock 265/40s????

why not run the blizzak 265/35s on the rears? how is this worse than (a) running 245s on 265 rims or (b) swapping the rear rims and tires to do 245s all-around?

answering my own question, the reason is that the sidewalls on the snow tires are softer than on summer tires, and if you go much smaller than 45 you're liable to end up rashing up your rims (or worse) on winter potholes. so that's the reason to just go 245/45-18 all-around.
