I just had my distronic system malfunction and was informed a need one or two of the control modules replaced at a cost of $4,100 each. Does anyone electroniclly repair these units. I cannot believe my only solution is to spend $4100 for a new module. Any suggestions? Greatly appreciated.

search eBay for the parts, complete distronic is around 1500$, and for all w203 fans yes it will work on w203 just need some extra parts from w209, it has been done before and it will be done again .

Hkirov:

I searched Ebay and was unable to find any distronic for sale. Were you refering to one that had been sold in the past or had you seen one for sale?
I searched all S55 parts for sale some 25 pages but did not see any reference to a distronic.

ok on ebay.com there are not so many some times none parts for the distronic system , on ebay.co.uk there are more but you have to check more often as delivery from uk is the fastest and the cheapest.

on ebay.de you will get all you need and for the language well use google translate if you are not familiar with it. just search distronic and you will find all you need and if it says from w211 or w209 or w220 no wories just look for the part number as they are all the same.

hate to belabor a subject but going crazy trying to decide what to do. Their are two fault codes showing up for the distronic. one is the sensor 0315451132 ($1740)and the other is the controler 0005408817 $3800. Outrageous. I have an s55 amg 2001 with 185,000 miles. No way willI spend that amount, maybe for the sensor.
Still looking for used parts but losing hope but I am not expert of surfing for these items.
I am looking at buying a similar car 2004 with supercharger at a reasonable price but selling 2001 with malfunction distronic mkes it difficul. Anybody have any leads on a distronic

I realize these cars are expensive but this is where MB misses the boat. You cant rape customers for 5 grand for an electronic module that can be built for 100 bucks tops and the sensors cost less than 100 each themselves. I dont mind them making a profit on parts, but not all of it on just me. That is a feature that would not be fixed if it was in my car.
I dont like any of the Jap cars out there but I wonder what it would cast to fix the same problem on 1 of their similar cars.

Do your search, everything takes time, right now both the parts you need are on eBay.de and they will go cheep, if you want to save money you have to do your thing, and aloso you have to fix it yourself after no one else can help you free, I even think the dealer is asking fair enough price for those parts, as they are so complicated and how many other cars have distronic, name just one. And if you think that's much ask how much is new headlight and go ask in BMW Audi and Mercedes for the same class cars and you will see that all parts are equaly priced.

Well my friend, how much du you think the iPhone cost to aple to be made Les than 50$ but what is the price in the store for an unlocked one 699$, and they made lots of them, how many modules do you think they make for the cars and how many years they last so you do your thinking and you will see that for the gadgets they have we pay less then the functionality delivered.

And you can always buy a civic and don't worry bouth cost

You will sometimes find markups in the range of 300% or more at the dealership...

Hkirov and Others;
I finally found one of the distronic parts. The control unit0315451132 Mercedes quoted $1740, another supplier quoted new $1400 but Quality Parts in ILLinois quoted $412 and guaranteed performance even though a used part. I searched thru Google and just put in Distronic and a raft of sites popped up. A lot of sites were discussion of adapting Distronic to older vintage MB's. Interesting reading.
Still looking for Sensor, Can buy new one about 15% below MB.
Regards and thanks for the suggestions.

Contact Steve @ MBENZNL.com he can help you re the parts

There are Two different Distronic eyes Early with the control unit located inside the vehicle and Late style with the control unit built into the eye...as posted make sure you get the part number correct or if used Pics of the rear of the eye
I added Distronic to my W211 and 209 and used the Late style eye as its a lot easier to retrofit

I still couldn't locate my part but I really learned a lot. First of all thanks for the tip on the translater on Goggle. It works like a charm and so convenient. Takes a lot of copy and paste but I'm not complaining. Great suggestion.
The ebay.de for S 55 AMG has over 100 pages. When I put in the part number for the Sensor nothing showed so I started another search and just went page by page. When I got to a device that was electrical I sent an email to that company with all the details to see if they could find one. I have about 5 requests to 5 companies that maybe in that line of business. I will wait and see.
One thing I noticed is that more than 50% of the items up for sale are scale models of MB cars. That must be a huge hobby in Germany.
I have purchased a S55 2004 identical to mine except has a super charger. Not that I wanted it but I felt the price was good so I went for it. I will put mine up for sale as soon as I can get the Distronic working at a resonable price. Again HK thanks for you help. I owe you one. Maybe some Philadelphia Flyers hockey tickets if you afre in the area.

Just an update on my Distronic malfunction. Kirov was a big help in locating one in Germany but it turns out it uses one connector. In that version the coax cable is combined with signal and power connector so I was told by the seller. I did put a bid in and could have purchased for about $150 US. I was almost ready to gamble on the chance it might work but I withdrew my bid. I went back to all the US vendors and asked if they knew any leads on one. One responded and send there was one on Ebay. I found it and bid started at $100 .. I asked the seller if he would consider a Buy It Now bid and at what price. He responded $350, I agreed and he changed his options to include a Buy It Now option and I ended up with the Sensor. I will install it this coming week.
I will put my S55 AMG 2001 up for sale after the distronic is working. I could have sold as is but I feel the Distronic is a great selling point and when working is a joy when you are driving long distances.
The final wrap up is I took delivery on an S55 AMG 2004 with 66,000 miles with all the same features as my 2001 plus the V8 supercharge Kompressor.
Thanks for all the comments and interest in my problem.

Well my friend, I understand this probably better than you do as I work for a medical company and we commonly mark up parts from 100 to 1800% depending on the part, plus we charge high shipping rates on top of that. I come to my statement as someone wwho tries to justify cost of p[arts to customers. It is kind of hard to explain to a customer that they are going to pay my company 110k for 3 boards in a set that we have less than 5k in.

My point being that there are times when mercedes could win big points and still make a good profit by not taking customers for thousands of dollars on a few hundred doallars worth of parts. When you have motor/transmission troubles and it cost a few thousand but it is back to factory is 1 thing. Electronics are another. Oh, and when I pay as much as I do for the car the electronics should be damn near bulletproof. I enjoy the technology as much as the next guy but not if it wasnt developed to be reliable.
I will give the german cars credit, they will come out with technology early, then the jap companies will take it and not only make it reliable, but cheaper also. That is the part the german companies dont understand. (I work for a Dutch Company so I know the culture)

Distronic now working

Just to close the loop on this saga of my distronic. I received the sensor and had it installed by a mechanic I met at the local Dunkin Donuts shop. Unblievable. He saw my S55 and approached me with his business card. Ended up at his faciltiy, a bare bones garage. Had years of experience with MB and was factory trained. I gave him the sensor, he marked location of old one, removed it replaced it with the one I had purchased for $350 and it worked perfectly and responded to body target walking within angles. Just to check it out he took it to local MB dealer since he didn't have sophisticated equipment to check it and it was lined up exactly and did not need any alignment. They charged him $50. I returned the controller that I purchased at $412 to the parts dealer paying a restocking charge. The bottom line is I spent around $700 to repair vrs $3800 for new sensor plus estmated $250 - 350 that local dealer would have charged.
The 2001 S55 AMG has everything working and I am advertising it on several sites plus here but I feel more comfortable knowing one of the main features is working fine. Thanks to all of you who have commented on this thread, you have been a big help.

I just got a check engine light and my car now has lost power. The used dealer said this could be the distronic sensors triggering this. Sounds like bs and fortunately the dealer will take the car back.

Car stalled out twice driving it two miles!

Any reason to think this could be the distronic malfunctioning and causing this?

No way. Check engine light is associated with the catalytic converter as well as a few other malfunctions. The distronic has a radar sensor and a control unit. I don't believe any of those out puts would be routed to the Check engine light. If it is the converter it is big bucks to replace and the s55 there are two of them.At lest 4,000 each.
I did sell my s55 amg 2001 and got $12,000 for it with 182,000 miles, Got a 2004 S55 K8kompressor 475HP for $25,000,.like brand new.
