I have 210k on the clock. I called around for estimates. $1,250 used, $2,500 new (installed). I sourced a used one for $350 but installation is unknown. I do not know how to install one of these but if anyone can point me in the right direction to a diy that would be appreciated.

I'm assuming that's 210K Miles, which is defiantly on the high side.

This is the first time I've heard of diff howling on a W220, although many years ago I remember my old 190E was making quite a of bit noise after only 120K.

Not sure how difficult they are to R&R you might try doing a good word search, but like I said I've never heard of anyone complaining about the diff and much less having to replace one.

Are the driveshaft flexi discs in good shape, or coming apart and putting stresses on the differential that causes the whining? (Good Visual check for a car with 210k.)

Here's a good link to both changing differential oil and replacing flex discs. It's on the W210 forum, but essentially the same for W220.

Sure would beat changing out a rear end if if worked.

And nice looking ride for a vehicle that has the miles to have gone to the moon!
