I have a 2001 E220 CDi Auto and have a rumbling noise from the front at speeds of 40-45 and below. I have coasted to stop in neutral so can discount gearbox wear.

Would it be a wheel bearing or brake binding problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

The car has full dealer history and 113,000 miles.

Don't rule out tire noise. Tire noise would be consistent with your symptoms. What kind of tires are you running and do you have the tire pressure checked frequently? Some tires just make more road noise than others, so the problem may not be mechanical at all.

Thanks for the reply.

I am running Goodyear Eagle NCT 5's

They were put on the front as part of the deal when I bought the car last week.

Now you come to mention it I do not remeber the noise being there berfore so you may well be right.

Maybe I'll shift the rears (another make) to the front and see what happens.
