I checked out the reviews on that Tekton and all positive for the most part, I like it because its 1/2 drive and 25" long that will really help! for $60 bought it,Thanks dtsdig !
Searched the net for reinforced HG for M103 and nothing comes up, just M104, pretty depressing hearing how long this job lasts.
The 300SE I sold a while back with the M103 had 160K on it with no head or leak issues, must have been a freak of nature!
Bummer on the HG redo. I'm in the same boat with my 91 CE. It's obvious to me that someone has already done a HG replacement job but it definitely needs to be done again. I've done a bunch of M103s but never a M104. It'll be interesting. Winter project maybe???
Got to do it before coolant mix's! now I need to get my pressure washer to start so I can get engine bay cleaned up before I even touch it, the leaking oil seems to have gotten everywhere, it used to be so clean.
I also bought a neat handheld steam cleaner and citrus cleaner for the delicate parts!
Yeah, its one expensive gasket! right now I'm researching prices on the rest of parts I need, think I'll wait to get the gasket kit and see what's missing, not sure if it comes with camshaft seal or timing cover seal, it should.
The prices of head bolts are a killer! for OEM its about $100, add washers $140! thats crazy money for me right now.
No oil in coolant yet, but one trip up the 15 during 100+ degrees could cook it!
Today I'm going to clean entire engine bay, top and bottom, was going to start taking it apart today, my son uses this car to go to work so I have to let him use my daily driver the KIA Sedona while I do the HG, I would rather have all the parts on the table so I can do a quick job!
If anyone has a better price for OEM head bolts #1029900810 let us know, best price I found is $7.08ea at AutoHauz AZ, dealer wanted $8.50ea, I asked why are these so expensive, he said their getting harder to find.
Right lol, well jacked the car up today and sprayed it down with engine cleaner, I did put a bag over the fuel distributor for caution, blasted the whole thing with my pressure washer, blew it out with compressed air, did the whole underneath of car, came out really clean!
Started right up thank god😀
Thanks, it got pretty dirty from that oil leak, after reviewing lots of posts and video's regarding the only flaw with this engine is the leaky head gasket issue, sure if you overheat it big time its going to warp the head and mix coolant with oil, but there's a ton of ,just leaking oil at rear of head due to dissimilar metals.
Should be in today Monday will update, it should be made out of gold! if it say's Victor Reinz on it I'll be pissed! I'm going to start job on the 19th, I should have all the parts by then, neighbor Rick is going to bring home one of those straight edge's from work so we can check head and block flatness.
Will update with pictures.
It will not say Victor Reinz, but it will just be the head gasket, I'm pretty sure. Mercedes normally does not sell kits.
The person at the counter has the authority to give you 25%-40% discount in most cases (usually not consumables like spark plugs, distributor caps, etc, but everything else).
This is their wholesale pricing to mechanics.
You do not have to buy it. If not satisfied it is ok not to purchase. My dealer does not even ask me to pay before I pick up the parts (and some are shipping from Germany).
It is always good to work with a competent parts person though, it is a hit or miss with some dealers.
Especially if he/she told you it is a kit (and it turns out to be just the HG), you can return it/not pick it up.
