Andy,
Well...if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck....It seemed from the get-go it was a ground issue and it was.

Whomever was crimping that ground wire spade receptacle at the factory was asleep at the wheel. It should have been soldered too and it was not. Yet all the wires on all the bulb tabs were soldered...what happened??

If that doesn't work, I'd probably next go to that big lighting module in the screw down box. Lots of members have found cold solder joints in there. Mine looked fine, but I re-soldered them all anyway.

Best of luck with the 500E!

Ahhh....well I understand now....that's a whole different chooch set-up than mine. I wondered what you guys were talking about . My rear lights are just a single strip as I pictured with one brown ground going to it.

Hopefully others with your setup will profit from the hr you spent looking for that old thread!

If all this continues to fail/not fail, you might check the ground wires in the hatch Kevin. After all, the third brake light is on that circuit.and with the way these cars are wired, you never know.

Let us know

Thanks Jim....I think it was that loose wire crimp on the tail light strip. But yeah, that bundle of wire that goes to the hatch stuff causes many owners lots of grief as the cars get older.

Good grief....here we go again!

Been great and no 'Bulb out' light. But...just the other day the top bulb on the left rear strip went out...triggering the 'Bulb out' light. Replaced the bulb with Osram.

Now here's the funny part; the 'Bulb out' light only turns on when the headlights are turned on. Parking lights, no. No lights during the day, no 'Bulb out' light.

Not seeing the connection between the 'Bulb out' light and the headlight function. Oh yeah, I cleared all the codes in case I was into some weird memory thing. All outside illumination seems normal and working.

Anybody...Flooby??

Hey, Kevin.

I remember reading that not all bulbs are detected by the lighting system as the "proper" voltage, thus triggering the "bulb out" light. Try another bulb, Sylvania, maybe?

Yeah, I do know this about the voltage things. All the bulbs in the back two strips are matching Osrams. What's weird this time is that the 'Bulb out' only illuminates when the headlights are turned on. Before with the bad ground, it was just on continuously. And I did really have a burned out bulb in the back that kicked off the 'Bulb out" feature again.

Maybe it's coincidence that my headlight voltage between the two sides is varied enough to trigger the 'Bulb out' light. I don't even know what the PO put in there. I could pull out the Sylvania's I have in the donor car and try them in there.

Put the spares in Kevin and I'd also look close at the ground bar. Probably not a bad idea to just go ahead and put an additional ground to the bar.

Thanks Jim.....I looked at the work I did on the right side ground strip....looks great. I even soldered the left ground strip to match, no difference. I'll post back on the headlight bulb swap.

I think I found the culprit. The driver's headlight is dimmer than the passenger. They have the aftermarket Euro light cases in there. The bulb I pulled out (what a nice system compare to the US DOT crap light assembly) is a Osram HB2 bulb.

Sooo....it would appear that "Bulb out' was not only doing its job, but pointed to the headlights as the issue. In this case, I did have two things wrong coincidentally....gotta love these old cars......

Hey Kevin,

You are probably way ahead of me on this....

As the 'bulb out sensor' reads small differences in current flow between L & Rt circuits, in this case, headlights.. I would get two bulbs & replace both.
Waaay back in the day, as a student in Volvo Service School, we were taught to approach bulb failures in this fashion and with my European cars I've done so since with good result.

Thanks, makes sense. I know this about matching bulbs & therefore voltages. Things are tight right now thanks to the *ucktards at the IRS and so I ordered one bulb. Will get another bulb soon.

Oh boy....now we're having fun!

Got the new bulb for the drivers light and installed. Same thing...dim and 'Bulb out' still on. Scratching my head I decided to see what happens on high beam.

High beam worked fine and the 'Bulb out' light went off. So then I flipped the high beam off and the 'Bulb out" light stayed off.

WTF.....so putting the cover back on the headlight went dim again. Back on high beam and the 'Bulb out' went off. Flipped off high beam and headlight OK again. Gotta be the wire bundle to the socket, right? Pulled, jiggled....nothing. Took the car for a long drive and everything is OK. So again, I say WTF.....nothing was really 'fixed' just voodoo making it work again I guess.

Maybe I need to get in there and look at the socket terminals with a magnifier....no visible corrosion that I see.

Another possbility is that your headlight switch is done for and playing tricks on you as a final cruel joke.

Certainly could be.....I hate electrical gremlins like this. The dimmer making everything work or not is pretty much over the top...........
