I currently own 5 Benz models from a W115 300D to a W220 S430. My "fun" car has been some form of modified Miata for the last ten years or so. Growing a bit older, and arguably wiser, I find myself yearning for more reserve and class while getting my speed fix.

An SL is the only way to go in my opinion. I have my sights on a 2001 SL500 AMG Sport. This thing is pristine with 34k miles, a stack of service records, all books, tools, first aid kit, floor mats still in plastic, etc, etc, etc. The only real clue that it's not new by looking at it is the odometer reading and a Sony CD changer in the boot. I had it checked out at the local dealer which originally sold it and has maintained it since new. All good, they say. An added benefit is safety. I can't see ferrying my little bundle of joy around in an aluminum Mazda.

It's silver over gray with AMG mono blocks and really looks the business. I NADA'ed it at $23,435. The owner is not budging from $26,000. Does the perfect service history, untouched look, and all the other positives warrant the extra few bucks? The owner is a fellow Benz freak and I know him quite well. If anything he is more fastidious in maintaining his cars than I am and I'm certifiably nuts. That coupled with the OK from the dealer service department leads me to think it's probably worth the extra few pennies.

What do you good folks think?

Regards,

At that price I would look for a Silver Arrow with may be 10-15 thousand more miles.

The asking price for this car in the current market is very, very high. My friend just dumped his '99 SL500 to buy an '03 E500 with 64K miles on the odometer for just $16K. I believe the blue book was around $23K. Also, for $26K you can get an '03 or newer R230 SL which is generally regarded as a better car than the R129.

I'm currently in Atlanta. If you have a Miata for sale or trade for an SL, please send me an email.

Thanks for the advice. I agree that the price is a notch or three high. I'm just trying balance the positive attributes against the extra five or so grand. I know the car, the owner, and the history. It's just up the street so I don't have to fly out and drive it home. I'll probably look around for an R230 as suggested as I certainly like them a bit more. If similar mileage and condition can be found, I'll go that way for sure.

Bob, I currently do not have a Miata that I'm willing to part with. The only one I've kept is my autocross blaster and I'll keep it for a while yet. I do know of one locally that is for sale. It's a '90, classic red, with the only option on board being AC. Manual everything...which is very desirable in my opinion. PM me and I can give you the owner's contact info. It's not listed anywhere.

edcarl, I'm guessing that a Silver Arrow denotes an R230??

No it's not R230. It's an R129 special edition to commemorate the last production of R129 series. Many believe it would someday be in the group of collectible cars.

If you want a good deal and are able to bring yourself to it eBay has by far the best prices. That price for the car you are looking at seems really high. But if you have cash to pay it all and know this is the car for you then just go and do it :D

Why not wait a bit and see what offers he gets, then step in. Kind of like EBAY. However if $$ are not a problem, buy it now. You get what you pay for.

I think this is not a sound advice. At that price you are NOT getting what you paid for. Rather, you are getting it for what the seller wants which is contrary to the current market condition.

Just my .02.
