FWIW, a post-auction comment posted by one commenter:

"I sold my sub 200 mile silver 1986 for $100k hammer plus buyer’s premium Jan. 2016."

Cheers,

Imagine you purchased a 200 mile car for $100k. If you drive it the devaluation would be tremendous. Who would pay $100k for a 5000 mile vehicle?

Basically you would never use it. Might be a good investment, but I prefer my $8k car I can drive any time I like and possibly sell in a few years for about the same..

This car is an identical twin of mine: same paint color and top. Mine has 79,000 miles and was bought for 9 large. I'll grand you, his ragtop is in better shape (on the inside), mine looks just as good on the outside.

Cars like to be driven. I'd worry about a car that never limbered up year after year.

Any three digit mileage 107s are future museum/private collection pieces, they'll never see 1K miles.
What is the point? If not driven regularly doesn't that cause mechanical parts to seize up, fluids to go bad, etc.? Meaning on the rare occasions you do want to drive it, you can't do so without extensive prep? May as well gut it and put the empty chassis in the museum.

I'm not sayin' it's the right way to treat one, it's just the only way to preserve that kind of value. 1K miles is a big line to cross in that regard.

Some people buy cars for an investment and rarely if at all drive them, others like to drive their cars. I personally wouldn't have the self control of having a car like the R107 sitting in the garage and not driving it.

I can't imagine having a car - any car, not just a 107 - as a museum piece that's never driven. What's the point? A car can only be truly enjoyed by being driven.

Which is why even if we could we'd never spend the money for one of these three or four digit mileage cars. My point is that there were so many of these built that only the best of the best will ever attain any real collector value. Anything over 10K miles will certainly slide well down the scale. I think anything over 50K miles will end up viewed as nice looking used cars as far as the collector world is concerned.
