I have often wondered about this. I live near a U-Wrench it salvage yard that always seems to have nice complete MB diesel engines laying about for reasonable money. I saw a fellow on Ebay selling a 404 with a 300 turbo diesel sedan included to do a engine swap that he claims is 'fairly easy conversion' Has anyone tried this or have any links to some information? If this is a reasonable job than I'll run off and fetch up one next time thay have a $199 complete engine sale. Thanks

From what I understand it is NOT an easy job unless you are a competent auto mechanic. The better of the bellhousing and motor mount kit to mate the 300td to the mog tranny alone is around 1500 dollars US. They can be mated in other ways but the fabrication is even harder.

I know someone who used a CAT 4cy in a 406 (or was it a 416.. shoot I forget) and the bolt pattern mated right up to the tranny. Maybe with 404's too? The Cat tows his Jeep around all day on the Hiway he says. He did not do the Cat install. A Cat shop did it for a total of 3500 dollars... including motor.

Links.

No kit used (just pics and a little explanation)
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59762&highlight=OM617A

Kit can be found at (German company)
http://home.t-online.de/home/C.Rettenberger/ediesel.htm

US guy that did this.
http://www.ki7xh.com/dieseliz.htm

I have more info on other 300TD options just email me at [email protected]

Here is a link to Website where Darrin in Wyoming turned a gasoline-powered 404 firetruck into a turbo diesel. His is probably the only Web site that details this in English - http://www.ki7xh.com/dieseliz.htm. Buch und Bild in Germany also sells a book called, 'Unimog-S 404 Verdieselung', by Dietrich/Haas. Unfortunatley, it is only in German. Good luck.
