Hi guys!

I just found out, that the waterpump on my 1982 500sec is leaking [:(] - took it to the shop, and they told me it needs replacement... so:

Is this a big job? The waterpump costs around 400 EUR; can I find it cheaper on the internet? Can I fix it myself - I'm no mechanic, but pretty good with my hands, though (and I've just purchased repair CD's for my car).

Thanks

If your bearings are good ( they usually are since they are oversized) you can rebuild it yourself with an inexpensive kit available (or used to be available) from Mercedes. But do pay attention in that you have to pull the impeller - and being a casting it is fragile. Maybe a local shop will have the special puller, or you can tap the casting holes and use a steering wheel type puller - you'll understand what the issue is when you remove the pump. But you can buy a new impeller if it breaks - just be sure you get the right interference fit on the shaft, Mercedes bores the impeller for you but it is too small and you have to open it up to match your shaft. Once done it will be good as new and you will have the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Another option is a rebuilt which are on the market, along with cheap knockoffs.

Hey

Thanks for your answers - I just found a couple of brand new pumps on the german ebay; both under 100 EUR, so that's quite a bit cheaper than here in Denmark! [:)] - my next step will probably be me studying my repair-CD's trying to decide if I'm gonna take on the challenge myself or call a more experienced mechanic! [:D][:D][:D]

Thanks again!

PS! Watching Letterman while writing this - gotta love that!! [;)]
