I'm just wondering if any one has managed to replace the starter motor without dropping the subframe? I'm sure it's possible

this method is not recommended for diesel engines as the starter motor is bigger than petrol models and I had to loosen the cooling pipe to make more room.

Removing the rigid water hose

Hi,

You really made it look easy .

I am in the process of removing the starter this way. I got to the point of removing the starter but can't get to the back bolt.

I am trying to remove the rigid pipe but I couldn't get it out after removing the torx screw.

Any tips of how to remove that pipe?

Or how to get to the back bolt and the wire connection of the Starter motor.

many thanks

not easy, but I've done it a few times and every time was easier than the previous one.
it's all bout choosing the right tool.
you need small hands I'm afraid.
best tool to undo the rear bolt is a 1/4 flexi-head ratchet and you need to find the right size extension, socket and hex or torx bit, ones it's loose you can undo it by hand.
the 10mm nut is the last to come out, turn the starter so you can see the nut and use 1/4 socket with universal joint and a long extension.
good luck.

That was very helpful thanks.

those last two bolts gave me so much grief , I don't have small hands but sore hands :D.

Managed to get the little devil out. Now I want to inspect the flywheel for wear to the teeth, is there any way of turning it on an Automatic ??

Many thanks for your input.

remove the right front wheel and plastic inner wings, or just the small cover with 3 8mm screws like the picture, and cut a little around the hole to fit a 17mm hex bit with a long extension to crank the crankshaft pulley.

Thx and sorry for my english

in case you haven't done it yet, it is not possible to access the starter from underneath the car.
However, this is what you can do instead without struggle or causing damage: you can unlock the bonnet lock with a long screw driver. Remove the washer bottle on your right and find the 2 wires for the PAS pump under a small cover. The thicker wire with 13mm nut is connected directly to the battery +ve.
I strongly advise you not to use jump leads from another car, unless strictly the engine is not running.

Not possible on A150?

Hi.

Apparently this isn't possible on the A150. Anybody managed to do it on one of thoose?
I thought the A160 and the A150 was nearly identical, but apparently there is a difference in the engine, probably some bluefficiency stuff?

Three workshops have quoted me €930-1100 for the job including the part cost which they state is €350.
Buying a Bosch part online costs €124, so the incentive for trying this job is very high.

Anybody managed to do it on the A150? A140, A160 and also A200 is apparently possible according to videos/comments on Youtube.

This thread, and subforum, are about W168, not W169 :wink

FWIW, I had a starter motor in my C169 A200 replaced by a highly regarded independent Mercedes specialist - total cost, including genuine Mercedes parts, was about £450.

I just saw a short youtube video of someone replacing the starter on A200 through the top. I'm sure he didn't know it's easier to do it from underneath.
