I've got a 1970 280se. As my mechanic tells me, it just runs rich and because of that, I replace the spark plugs every 6 months or so. It seems to run smoother and cleaner when i do this. However, I recently replaced them and I seemed to have lost power and my baby is running rougher now. When I bought my plugs times before, they were alredy pre-gapped to 32 how I needed them but I went back to pep boys yesterday and bought two more to check em and they are gapped to 44. So I think I'm going to take them out and fix this problem, however a friend just told me that he thinks that for some reason I shouldn't be using the washer when installing the spark plugs. I've never heard of this but I though it be worth investigating. Can anyone help a newbie out?

I would get the mfi system cleaned, the injectors are dirty thats why it appears to run rich.Your mechanic should have pointed this out to you.The MFI needs to be tuned by a Bosch specialist ,not the local pepboys or shivvy shop. While it is running rich it will ruin plugs and will destroy your engine.
The excess fuel washes the oil from the cylinder walls and the rings run dry.[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(]

How can I find a Bosch specialist? Living in Fresno, Ca can be kind of limiting. I've taken my car to an old German mechanic before and he's always been good. Maybe I should give him a call. How much would you estimate something like this would cost me? I'm currently in a "starving artist" financial state.

You will be "starving artist" who walks every where if you don't fix your car properly.[:(]
If you have access to a Mercedes trained mechanic of the old school, especially a german emigre, cherish him.
In the San Francisco bay area is a fantastic guy who rebuilds the injection pumps.
His name is Gus Pfister,at Pacific fuel injection. He should be able to refer you to a Bosch service center.[:D].
The main thing is to get someone who does the job in the correct order, starting with an igniton check before proceeding to the fuel injection.Once the car is in top conditon you will be amazed at the 120mph performance.
