Here is how I replace my old faded hood emblem.
First, gently ply off the the emblem with a philip screw driver. I use some paint tape to protect the paint around the emblem. As you can see from the pictures below, there are two inserts underneath the emblem, just ply around them and it gets off very easy!

After you take off the old emblem, replace it with a new one. I know the two inserts is gonna hold the emblem, but I also put some 3M mounting tape below the emblem to further secure it from the hood.

The part number of the emblem is A 638 817 01 16. I bought this from eBay for $25 shipped (original part, not aftermarket). Dealer is charging me for $68!

Oh yes...it's just a 5 minute job! ;)

Or you can order it from autohausaz.com for under $21, although you have to spend a few more dollars to get free shipping, easily done with a couple of filters and some wiper blade refills. :D:D (If you haven't yet discovered the joy of autohausaz.com, many members buy from them.)

BenzUber, I like what you did with your mileage badge!

I always wanted to replace flat badge with regular standing up star found on S-class sedans. Do you guys think it's possible? I remember my old s500 had hood star replaced. I had to put star through the hole and then hook the spring under the hood to hold it upright. Is there access under the hood in ML?

Plus 2. There are two different designs, the older one that Victor describes and the newer (since mid-90s or so) that as an assembly sits in (and requires) a dimpled area in the hood.

Anything can be modified or altered to suit your preference. The questions you have to answer are:

1. How good do I want it to look when I'm finished?
2. How much am I willing to spend to have a certain look?

It should be obvious that the former will tend to dictate the latter. You can do this pretty cheaply and that's how it will look, or you can go to a body shop and ask for an estimate to do it as a quality job.
