I have been playing desk mechanic this week and went looking for advice on replacing the front axle doube cardan joints. It turns out even though the unis are listed as repair items by MB, there is absolutely Zero directions in the WSM regarding replacement. Not much on this forum also. Long story short, it turns out the new joints are significantly longer than the available space within the clevis frame(s). In the case of the SBU, 104.5mm vs 103mm;

The question was then whether this is normal, or something wrong somewhere.......
My thought was that careful squeezing was appropriate, but with no WSM info to back this up - it was annoying to say the least.

After scouring the internet I did find one 416 mog owner who faced the same issue. The problem starts at around the 12.00 mark.

He appears to be a bit rough in his approach, but still, he could well be correct in his basic approach that aligns with my initial thoughts. As this could be a potential show-stopper for some, it would be good to hear from those who actually tackled this problem.

Thanks to Heiko_mog, we now know a bit more about this issue.
The newer joints do indeed need a bit of pressure to make it fit, so hammering it in place is not the go.
Also, some aftermarket parts are not quite compatible. The centre-cross on some is beefier, but causes interference and limits the steering angle - possibly causing damage to the yoke. So, check before re-assembly. The original parts were made by GWB who is now owned by Spicer. The spicer part is K5-769. The original GWB part is 469.30
In some cases the extra material can be removed allowing full steering angle, but at your own peril I would say......
The attachment shows Spicer Australia has 2 Unimog UJ's the one is obviously meant to be the GWB replacement, but the other ? Of note is that the 769 part is shown as 104mm, vs 104.5mm - in addition, the 769 has a 9deg offset - which is correct.
In addition, there has been at least 3 variations over the years with regards to the whole Uni-Cardan setup. Many combinations of getting things wrong therefore exist. It pays to be really careful and comparison to the original part being replaced should be approached with utmost caution.

The units are not meant to be greased via the "grease nipples" the threaded holes that are often mistaken for grease servicing, is in fact there to enable pulling out the caps and dismantling the units. Hence, only 2 holes. The MB WSM does not mention servicing the units, but general advice I have come across indicated that they should be dismantled/inspected/repacked with lithium grease at a period determined by the OEM. 40ys, I would suggest is too long a time to expect these units to last. I would suggest they be serviced every 5-10yrs depending on how hard they have been worked.
