have a 2004 ml350 that needs driver door lock replaced. Have looked at posts but unsure if the outside door handle needs to be removed in order for the door lock to be replaced. how is the actuator connected to the handle itself? thanks.

The handle does need to be removed. There is a small plug just above the latch, on the same serface as the door panel. Remove that plug, I think it is a 4mm allen that you need to loosen a set screw. Then the door lock cylinder will come off. Slide the handle to the rear, remove both screws and then the rest of the handle assemble that is on the inside of the door will come out. Reinstall in reverse order.... :) ( always wanted to say that...)

Fairly easy job as I just did mine. One tool I needed was an extra long 4mm allen key as you do need to remove the lock side of the handle.

Got lucky and found it on e-bay 80.00 shipped. You may want to fill out your profile when you get a chance.

Be careful not to lose the Allen screw inside the door.
