Replace Vito Head unit

Hi, New Vito owner here , so be gentle, please ;)

I've bought a new head unit to replace the Sound 10 that was in the dash. When I've come to fit it the new one is about half an inch longer than the old one and wont shove right in. It is being stopped by the bracket shown below

Auto part Vehicle Car Technology Wire

From what I can see this is not just a small bracket, it is attached to "something large".

My question is , is it safe to remove it in full, or should I cut it off?

Thanks for reply, Ian. I understand why the bracket is there it's just that the new radio is bigger than the original one, and rather than the bracket supporting the radio it stops it going all of the way in. So I've either to remove the bracket or cut half an inch off the back of the radio!

It seems to be a massively bigger bracket than it needs to be and I was wondering if anyone knew why, before I go at it with a hack saw or a hammer ;)
