Silver Arrow's '93 car has a CAN data communication bus but dfraz's '91 does not. Dfraz would need to update the instrument cluster and fuel injection and ignition systems just to name a few of the technical changes necessary to make a newer-style contoller function properly.
An important technical problem is the compressor. The newer controller has an analog output to work with a "variable displacement"-type compressor which normally never disengages to control evaporator temperature. But the older compressors are either "on" or "off" and are incompatible with this scheme. Think of the newer controller as a light dimmer and the older as a simple on/off switch.
Silver Arrow, you are obviously happy with your updated controller. But I am afraid that if you investigated you would find your system is not working properly. That is, the controller is not receiving all of the inputs it is designed to receive and the compressor is not being controlled optimally. Mind you, I hope I am wrong. If you are interested in checking the system, I can help if asked.
