From a practical viewpoint it is not possible. The components and system architecture were changed along with the controller in '97. For example, on your '91 a dedicated sensor provides a coolant temperature signal to the controller, while on a '97 the controller receives the temperature from the instrument cluster.

It is possible, but it's a very difficult. I did on my 1993 SL. A lot of modifications took place. The professional electrician in Beirut had a map for the wiring, as well as he had to modify something that has to do with the fan. That's all I know. Here's a pic.

Silver Arrow's '93 car has a CAN data communication bus but dfraz's '91 does not. Dfraz would need to update the instrument cluster and fuel injection and ignition systems just to name a few of the technical changes necessary to make a newer-style contoller function properly.

An important technical problem is the compressor. The newer controller has an analog output to work with a "variable displacement"-type compressor which normally never disengages to control evaporator temperature. But the older compressors are either "on" or "off" and are incompatible with this scheme. Think of the newer controller as a light dimmer and the older as a simple on/off switch.

Silver Arrow, you are obviously happy with your updated controller. But I am afraid that if you investigated you would find your system is not working properly. That is, the controller is not receiving all of the inputs it is designed to receive and the compressor is not being controlled optimally. Mind you, I hope I am wrong. If you are interested in checking the system, I can help if asked.

My friend has a 1990 SL, and he has the new digital climate module. However, I'm not sure if more modification was made than made. This modification is made frequently here.
Till now, I haven't experienced any malfunctions. I don't know if this will stay like this. Cerntainly hope so. Thanks bobterry99 for the technical explanation.

What model is it and from what year? If it's fiber, how did you get it to work in your car?

I've got the original setup and I'd like to replace it with a factory unit but from maybe a 2001 model.

I've seen another nav unit that fits in that place as well.

How do you input where you want to go?

It's called APS4. It's 1999 or 2000 model, not quite sure.
It's not fiber optic. I bought it with the navigation system along with the wires. So you need all these.
The navigation system is not working because the system is not implemented in my country. So I don't know how it works. I believe you need a CD of the country you're in.

Well Bob, I stand corrected. The climate control is stuck on LO AC and will not adjust with the temperature wheel. This would be find during the summer but it is cool has [email protected] here right now and I need heat.I have taken it apart several times and reassembled the unit to make sure nothing is broken and everything is connected properly. Any advise?[8]
