Hi, I just bought a 190E from '84 (270.000 km). A friend told me that it would be a good idea to replace the chain (I don't know its exact name - he called it the topchamber-chain). He said it should be replaced after 200.000 km to avoid it brake and damage the entire engine.

Does anyone know if this is true - should the chain be replaced? The guy I bought it from says it's not nessasary - said he'd never heard of anyone replacing it.

Thanks for your input.

Timing chain failure on the M102s and 103s of this era is rare. The chains are inspected and replaced if needed when other work is done such as leaking seals. It’s really a toss-up, with those miles chain replacement is not a bad idea.
