This seems to be a bad month for my SL500. First, I find out the instrument cluster needs to be replaced them my antena stops working. Since the mechanic estimated that it would be about $800 to replace, I think I might try this one myself.

Has anyone already done this? Or point me where I could find some good instructions?

By the way, I have a 1996 SL500. Also, it appears to be the gears. Have already tried a new mast and when the radio is turned on or off you can hear the antena motor running.

And I guess since this stuff tends to come in threes, I also need new tires. The old pocket book is going to feel pretty lite after all this is done.

if i were in your shoes i would have two choices:

1.-replace the antenna w/a black rubber one like the ones the new nissan 350z has. it seems like it would outlast any electric antenna anyday. $800.00 for a damn antenna is not even funny.

2.-believe it or not, i just had the same problem. the stealer told me $700.00 to replace the antenna,

i laughed so hard and when i was finished laughing, the stealer said: well there's another option, we can take the motor apart and flip the gears.
most of the time only half of the gears are broken and by flipping it the antenna works as good as new; that will only cost you $180.00.

I laughed again and told them not to fix it, for $50.00 i could replace it myself.

Later i get a call telling me that the antenna was fixed and that since it was their mistake it would only cost me $40.00, so i said ok.

bottom line is: suppossedly by taking the antenna apart and fliping the gears you can get it to work. i think this is definetely worth a try for you. let us know how it turns out.

LOL! From $700 to $40, can't beat that.

Not sure about using the antena from anything else. I like it to look factory. I already ordered a new replacement for $200, but I'll try the gears first and if that works I can always send the new one back.
