Good afternoon all,

Ok I need some help here. I purchased an 89 560 SEL last summer. I could not pass this deal up. The car runs great, it has 110,000 miles on it. It was my mechanics customers car. It had timing chain done, exhaust, head gaskets, rear hydrolic suspension etc.. The seats were beat though. I resently purchased a 91 560 sel for parts. The interior is mint. Not one scratch or blem in the leather. You see were I am going with this right?!?!!

Now the fun part. I went to get some estimates to repaint my car. I live in northern NJ. Two shops said 3500 - 4000. They were not to specific how and what they would do. Then I went to two others. One gave me a written quotes of $8,000.00 and the other was $9500.00 The later of the four seems very high however he is was planning to do the following;

1. remove all moulding, grills, lights, rails, bumpers, etc... Stripped (I mean everything)
2. Remove front windshield and replace with a new one. Non Mercedes - $275.00. Mercedes OEM $600 - $700 from the dealer.
3. Paint the whole car black (040) origional color using the best paint. Made by the company who owns Glasurit. (Material 1200.00) two gallons of primer, two gallons of paint, two gallons of clear)
4. Paint all lower molding black (040)
5. Repaint my wheels. ($600)

I did see the work that this company can do. Their paint jobs are incredible. The lines are straight. I also saw his 69 Mustang GT fastback he completed. It was Great.

Can anyone let me know what they have paid for their car to be repainted. I was blown away by the $8000 - $9500.00 pricing. Also can you provide me any autobody shops that do great work but are more reasonably priced. All your help is greatly appreciated. I will add some pics of the car later.

The $9500 paint job you describe is simply the correct way to paint the car. Regional costs vary, but supplies do not. PPG supplies to correctly paint the car are under $300 and glazurit supplies are close to 41200. The paint job that you are quoting at $9500 can be had in Chicago for 7k, less in the southern states. If you are confident in the painter's skill, go with your gut. How about the painter who quoted 8k?

any qoute over 6000 should include having the engine pulled, engine bay painted, and the underbody restored. But is this really what you want to do? a near full restoration?

Your gonna laugh, but I got mine painted for $1,200.00 At macco in Palm Beach Florida. It looks like new. I don't knwo what kind of paint and clear coat they used, but it looks like the exact same color as before. As long as I get 5 years out of it, I'm happy. By then I will have purchased another one I am sure. Also they painted my wheels for 100.00. There is no over spray on the car at all. I was really suprised. My Mechanic recomended them. I was skeptical at frist, but I would certainly do it again, before I would pay a huge price.

A 1991 560SEC is not a disposable car. In the future, it will be one of the most collectable of all 126's. Please do not confuse the issue with comparisons to $1500 126 sedans.

I wouldn't goto macco if they paid me to have my car painted. My van was a macco job... The paint on the roof ran into the gutters, now on rainy days I can't open my windows, not even a crack or the water runs into my lap. In other spots the paint is just flaking off the primer... Sadly I can't take it back, because I bought it POST paint, they won't cover it since I'm not the owner that paid. Try the shops in Brooklyn or Queens... If I wasn't gone from there for so long I could tell you a few shops, but 10 years away, they all closed or changed names... Call a few more places, see what you find. Then go with your gut feeling about it...

heh... I remember the price I payed for having my SEC resprayed a couple of years agoo [xx(]

anyways, I've just bought a 420 SE and paint equipment... I'm now stiping the car pcs by pcs and will paint it myself this time round!

Lets just say I could paint and fail 15 times for the same price as it cost to have the SEC done... plus I like all DIY jobs ;)

it may not be a Disposable car in some peoples eyes. To me it's a car, a Mercedes. I won't drive anything else, and I go through them like water. I have had my share of SEC's too. I am sure by the time they become collectors Items, I will have an opertunity to purchase another. They are on the Auction blocks quite regularly. Don't get me wrong I am not dis'ing the car at all. Like I said I would never drive anything else. My experience with Macco was a good one. I had no problems with it at all. If I can get what I want for less I am certainly gonna save the money. Kinda like when you by a Diamond. If you can buy 10 carat Diamond from Tiffany for 400,000, or if you can get that same Diamond still flawless from a pawn shop for 40,000.00 I am sure most will spend the 40,000.00. Now weather or not they have the balls to admit it is another thing.lol

MRTIKKET,
Thanks for your comments and at least letting me know that their are prices out there that are somewhat close. I just did not expect the price to be that high. I will look further as well as be very specific when I speak to other body shops. I would like to compare apples to apples. Here is a picture of Kenny's car that he restored. I guess you get what you pay for. Plus my 91 560 SEC is mint, so I am spoiled..

Thanks.[:(][:D]

IceBlue,
I thought about that as well, however I have the interior from a 1991 560 SEL which is mint (same Color Gray). Also I know the history on the car. It was never hit as well. Which is a plus. Here is a picture of the car when I purchased it.

Thanks'

Cyberdrakon,

I definately do not what to do a complete restoration. I am planning to go back and speak to Kenny (autobody shop) to see if we can com to a compromise. I love his work. He was the most honest person so far. It's just that price... Darn.. This is killing me.

Thanks for your comments and question.

Englevakten,

You are lucky to have the time to do this, plus you enjoy it as well. That's half the battle.. Both you and cyberdrakon have great SEC's by the way. I would like to get my lower panel painted to match the white on my 91 560 SEC, but the 89 comes first.

if you have the time and the talent I would say go for it yourself. At least the prep work. That alone could save you some major bucks. I would love to, but I am not that talented. I am sure if painted one, it would resemble a spray paint can job.lol

Jessie,
This is one thing that I would never touch. Prep work, "Yes" paint, "No". I view body work as art and talent. Some people have it, some do not. I happen to be the "Not". I am just getting impatient about having this car re-painted and adding 18" AMG Monoblock to it. I love the 126 body. It must be the lines... Here is a pic of my 91 560 SEC. This is how I would like my SEL to look. Paint in Black of course.
