Hi, my mechanic tells me that it is a good idea to remove the small gasoline filter in the injection system (on older W124's), because it only gives problems (engine runs badly over time). His argument is that the gasolin filter at the tank is more than enough to keep filtering the gasolin, and this extra filter is only given bad gasolin flow to the engine. Well ... my opinion is that MB engineers must had a reason to put it there ... on the other hand, I think nobody (outside the official MB workshops) even know it is there, and never clean or replace it with a new. What is Your opinion ? ... have anyone heard this argument before ?

A nice day to all of you :)

You must find a new mechanic as soon as possible. If he is giving advice this bad on a simple issue I shudder to think what he might suggest on other topics.

Removing the fuel filter is a very bad idea. It traps the very fine particles that may in fuel from whatever source; particles that will cause very bad problems if they make it to the fuel distributor or injectors.

As for the filter giving bad flow eventually, well, that why you are supposed to REPLACE the filter at regular intervals.

I don't know where you are located but I've heard that a lot of countries don't have fuel quality standards as high as those in the USA. If that's the case where you live, replacing the filter yearly is important. And even more reason to keep in in place and doing its job.

Fill out your profile.

If the filter in your car is so old that chunks of the paper element start falling apart in the fuel system, what is going to stop those filter elements from ruining your fuel injection system.
